Boba Classic Baby Carrier 2G- Which One To Chose

Boba is a Soft Structured baby carrier (SSC) that is intended for children between 15 to 45 lbs. Boba has a few extra inches of height to keep your center of gravity closer to your body and support your little one’s back.

The innovative thing about the Boba carrier is that there are foot straps attached to the waist belt for the child’s feet to sit in enabling a healthy sitting position for the child.

The footstraps not only give little tired legs a rest, but support the legs in a flexed abducted (froglike) position which naturally tilts the pelvis, fills out the hip sockets, and aligns the spine.

Boba Classic features:

  • Made with 100% natural brushed cotton
  • Made in China
  • Features our patent-pending, removable foot straps
  • Includes a matching, removable sleeping hood
  • Has military grade buckle on waist band
  • Contoured waist band for extra comfort
  • Has a high back panel for safety and support
  • Fully adjustable shoulder straps and waist band
  • Available in six earth-inspired colors: Glacier, Mist, Breeze, Dusk, Earth and Twilight
  • One Size

Can’t leave home (or stay home) without it!, April 6, 2011

My husband and I love the Boba… oh, and my 10 month old daughter loves the Boba too! I may not have purchased this if I hadn’t gotten it on sale but I’d purchase it for full price (or more) again in a heartbeat and have contemplated buying a second. We had a Jeep baby carrier for when our daughter was little. My husband loved it but I could never get comfortable carrying her for long. At 20lbs she had grown past the point where either of us could use it so, after some research, I decided to give Boba a try. I am not disappointed! I was worried that my active and inquisitive (read: downright nosy) daughter would want to be facing out but several places recommended this isn’t the best for their physical development. I didn’t need to worry. The first time we put her in it (on the front) she settled in and fell asleep! After a week, when she saw the Boba she’d instantly start to relax and “help” me get her into it. After a month, I could say “is it Boba time?” and get comforting coos even at the fussiest time. Amazing how this simple carrier could have that affect.

This carrier is easily adaptable to both my 5’7″ 140lb frame and my husband’s 6’4′ 180lb frame. The color is fresh and blends well. Neither of us have any problem loading her in the front alone. I was able to master the back load by myself the very first time I tried it (after watching the videos on the Boba website, [...]). My husband hasn’t tried this alone yet but it’s not really necessary at her age.

The sleeping hood has come in handy though, like other reviewers note, our daughter doesn’t often want it up before she falls asleep. It’s easy enough to unroll after she falls asleep, roll back up after, or leave hanging for a bit. The whole carrier is easy to stash in a car or a suitcase for travel.

Best of all, it’s comfortable to carry her! We find ourselves using the Boba in places where we previously used a stroller (for example, the aquarium where she was then at eye level with the fish). And that’s in addition to me using it at home while I clean things up around the house (note: I don’t “wear” my baby all day or even every day but when I need to or she wants to, I don’t hesitate to whip this carrier out). There is plenty of room for growth and I imagine this carrier will be comfortable even as she gets older because it’s so easy to adjust.

On the issue of the foot straps. We have used them but don’t really need to yet. Those reviewers who complain that they’re useless may not be reading the instructions. The foot straps aren’t really needed until your child gets a little older. In the meantime, they’re easily removable if you feel you need to (we just leave ours on).

Don’t hesitate! Buy this carrier. You’ll love it as much as we do… and will hopefully use it for a long time.

Love this carrier! It’s super comfortable and so much quicker to get into and out of than the wrap I was using before. My 7 month old who is not a snuggler at all, just cuddles right in and sleeps on me when we’re out running errands. It distributes his weight all across my back and hips making it easy to carry him for hours with no discomfort. My 40 pound three-year-old also fits comfortably in the carrier on my back. I also appreciate that Boba is made in the USA, unlike Ergo which is made in China, and the design is much more attractive.

I am SO happy with this purchase! I have used the Boba with my 8 month old as well as with my 3 1/2 year old and it works wonderfully with both. It is very easy to use, I can use it, by myself, front or back with both children. The only difficulty is attaching the hood when my baby falls asleep on my back. The belt is wide and distributes the weight wonderfully. The carrier is about 2 inches taller than the Ergo, so it will last longer as the kids grow. You can store the hood tidily so you don’t look so frumpy with all the strings and things hanging around as with the Ergo. I would reccomend the Boba carrier to any parents.

Pikkolo Soft Structured Baby Carrier- Just Perfect!

The Pikkolo by CatBird Baby represents the height of carrier flexibility. You can completely customize it to meet you and your baby’s ever-changing needs over time, and use it in a myriad of positions.

  • Do you like the closeness of an unpadded apron-style waistband with your little baby in a front carry, but need more padding once baby gets heavier and moves to your back? No problem, add the Babywearing Support Belt to your Pikkolo when you need it.
  • Want to cross the straps at your back? Great, go ahead!
  • Hip carry? No problem.
  • Need to make the carrier body narrower for a very small or a front-facing baby? Cinch it!
  • Prefer a shorter carrier for smaller babies? You’ve got it. Then, when baby gets taller, unfold the bottom of the Pikkolo carrier and add the Babywearing Support Belt for several extra inches in carrier body height

Pikkolo Product Details

  • For babies to toddlers. Recommended weight range is 8-40 pounds.
  • All Pikkolo carriers include a sleeping hood, chest strap and instruction manual and are 100% cotton, exclusive of trim.
  • Child can be worn on front (facing in or out), back, or hip and easily shifted from one to the other.
  • Front carry: Shoulder straps can be worn either crossed in back or backpack-style (straight over each shoulder).
Back carry: You can cross the straps in front for a back carry, but it will most likely make your boobs look and/or feel weird. Feel free to give it a try though! If you are small-chested, a crossed-strap back carry might work for you.
  • The Pikkolo has a cinching mechanism on either side of the carrier body to narrow the carrier. You can then comfortably wear your baby in front facing out. The baby is held in a healthy semi-seated position which does not place as much pressure on the crotch and spine of the baby as a Baby Bjorn does. It’s not so good for *your* back after about 15-17 pounds though, so be careful.
  • The ability to cinch the carrier body also makes it good for wearing small babies. A narrower cinched carrier body means that a small baby will not have to spread his legs very wide while riding.
  • Contoured sleeping hood in soft cotton, now with elastic along sides for a better fit and more support to little sleeping heads.
  • Brushed twill cotton fabric is feather-soft, feels wonderful against the skin. No more break-in period for your Pikkolo!
  • Unstructured apron-style waistband makes it possible to precisely adjust the carrier’s fit. Fits both short-waisted and long-waisted body types. This type of waistband is meant to be worn snugly around your natural waist, not loose/low on top of the hips like padded waistbands. Won’t pull your pants down!
  • Babywearing Belt accessory is now available, so if you *want* a padded waistband (you probably will after your babe hits 20 pounds), you simply attach it to the existing waistband. Another huge plus for flexibility and being able to customize your carrier to best suit your changing needs. See below for the waistband sleeve AKA Babywearing Belt.
  • Tested to fit wearers between 4’10″ and 6’2″. One wearer said that she was able to adjust the Pikkolo to fit her 7 year old, 45 pound daughter (who wanted to carry a younger child). I am 5’8″ with a long torso, and it still fits me with plenty of strap room to spare.
  • All buckles are dual-adjustable and adjust both ways, for optimal fit and ease of adjustment. You can pull the straps from either side of the buckle, as well as change the location of the buckle itself.
  • Shoulder straps are padded with deluxe memory foam (the same stuff found in expensive Tempurpedic mattresses). It is very thin, but incredibly cushy and shock-absorbent. As the foam becomes warmed by your body heat, it shapes itself to your shoulders for a glove-like fit.Be warned that the shoulder straps are very *wide* on the Pikkolo, which is not necessarily the most comfortable, especially for petite wearers.
  • Recommended care: wash on gentle cycle in cold water with a mild detergent. Dry on low until just damp, then hang to finish drying in well ventilated area. Spot clean when needed.

I absolutely LOVE this pack! I’ve had it for just over a month now, and it gets used every day. Sometimes multiple times during the day. Learning to use it can be a bit complicated, but it’s not difficult once you get it down. My 3 month old hates being in his stroller or car seat, so I carry this pack with me everywhere. It’s his main mode of transportation when he’s not in the car. Originally I was given a Jeep front carrier, but that hurt my back and shoulders. I’ve had two back surgeries and deal with a lot of back pain already. This carrier has the hip belt, which is a must for me. It’s much better on your back and shoulders. Plus, I like the fact there is nothing between me and him. He is securely held in waist belt, and then pressed up against me. Since my son always falls asleep in his carrier (front carry, facing in), it makes it easy to remove the pack after we get home. I can even just lay down on the sofa, unbuckle and slide out everything, and then he can nap right there with me!He isn’t quite big enough for the back carry yet, but I have practiced putting the carrier on that way. It is a little more complicated than some, again, but not hard to figure out. I love the fact that this can be used in so many ways- front facing in, front facing out, hip carry, and back carry. And since it holds a baby up to 40 pounds, there won’t be any need for me to look into a new carrier over the years. It is well worth the money.

I am so pleased with this carrier. I spent an hour in the sling store, going back and forth with my 5-month old baby between this and an Ergo carrier. In the end I went with the Pikkolo because it was more comfortable to me, you could wear baby front facing out (cannot do this in an Ergo), front facing in, hip and back. I also found the carrier body to be short on the Ergo and my baby’s legs seemed to be sort of sticking straight out, rather than appearing seated as they do in the Pikkolo. I like that you can narrow the leg area to get a comfortable seated position for your little one.I’d been using a Moby Wrap but it was getting too hot in the Texas heat, and my son was too heavy (18 lbs!) for me to carry him in the Bjorn Active anymore. I wanted a soft-structured carrier that would get me through toddlerhood and this one fits the bill. I use it at the grocery store, Target, running just about any errand. I can put it on right there in the parking lot quickly and my baby really loves it. All in all a great carrier and well worth the money in my opinion. I got the Mocca Rouge fabric and it is adorable to boot.

Baby wraps are great if you have the time to deal with loose straps and are comfortable with a greater learning curve, but I needed something with simple buckles and adjustable straps that wouldn’t hurt my back after wearing it all day. Prior to the Pikkolo, I had a Peanut Shell sling (which is very easy, but hurt my back) and an Infantino soft structure carrier (hurt my back AND had straps that easily tangled). I’d also tried the Becco Butterfly to determine what works best for me.

The Pikkolo is structured the same as the Mei Tei wrap (both made by Cat Bird Baby), but the Pikkolo has easy buckles and straps for us moms who need the ease of using a carrier. I chose the Pikkolo over the Becco because of the carrying options- front, back, outward facing & hip.

The Pikkolo doesn’t hurt my back, I have ease of use without any additional help (a must for a single parent!), and it has versatile carries which will come in handy as my son grows.

Pros: Relatively inexpensive, good material, sturdy build.
Cons: None
Overall: We’ve had this carrier for the past 6 months and we literally take it everywhere. There is a good amount of support for both the baby and the parent. For the parent (me) there are various harnesses which ensure that the pack sits comfortably against my back and does not move around much. For our baby the seat is very comfortable. It’s useful for places where the pram really is a nuisance. For example when we catch a train and or go shopping or even for extended walks.

I might even consider purchasing the Escape now after having used this for some time.

Pros: WE LOVE THIS CARRIER!! It is so small and compact. Easy to load the child.
Cons: There is very little storage space.
Overall: So handy. Fold flat – great for overhead luggage in a plane. Our daughter sleeps beautifully in the carrier. I love that it can take very young babies. The shade and rain covers are excellent. Our daughter is very small for her age and I tend to get quite tired carrying her. I am not sure how a particularly heavy child would go.

My 11 month old loves it.
I bought this backpack about a month ago and was unsure how much use I would get out of it. We use it all the time. My son almost always falls asleep in it he is so comfortable. It doesn’t bother my back or shoulders at all. There is a pouch on the backpack but it isn’t too big, not that it has caused us a problem.

I purchased this pack online after researching many brands. The price ultimately sold me on this particular back pack and I am SO glad I went with this one! I was kinda expecting a pack that looked “cheaper” than the others because it was so much less. (The other one I was debating upon was $170) Also, the previous reviews made me nervous about how it would fit but they either had big problems figuring out the straps or just never wore a back pack before because I had NO problem with this. I am over 6 feet tall and on the large size for a woman so I usually have issues with things fitting my body size. I have a long torso and this pack actually fits me the way it is supposed to! I also have a chest larger than Pamela Anderson’s and I have no problem buckling the chest strap :o ) I don’t know why the other person had such a problem because I still have room to tighten it as it doesn’t even go over my chest but above it. So not only does it fit great but it looks fabulous and really well made! Also, the stand is very easy to collapse and extend. There is no button to push; it simply pushes in or pulls out and is held by tension in the stand arm. My son is 9 months, 25 lbs and about 28 inches tall and he fits great. The first day I had it I took it out on a 2 mile hike and had NO soreness or awkward feelings in my step. I am just so in love with this pack! AND the wind shield is GREAT and not included on many models that are $100 more than this Chicco! The only thing that is lame is the bag on the back of the pack. It’s unsafe since anyone could unzip it if you are walking in a crowd and steal your stuff. Not to mention that you can’t reach it without taking the pack off but you DO have the option of wearing it as a fanny pack so that’s good AND you could use it to store the wind visor thingy when you don’t need it. It’s really a non-issue but I felt I should include just one con :o ) Buy this pack! You won’t regret it!!!

I have been wanting a backpack carrier for some time – one with a metal stand so it would be easier to get my son in and out of. I finally broke down and bought a new one after not being able to find a used one. I purchased this one because it seemed to be reasonably priced and it got good reviews. I was a little nervous about it since some of the people that were petite said that it didn’t fit them and that it was too big. I’m 4’11″ and it fits me just fine so I am not sure what they are talking about. I also didn’t have any problems with it being too tight in the chest area too and I would say I’m a pretty average size. Some of the reviews said that they need someone else to help them with the metal stand – I have not experienced that either. My son is almost 17 months old and he is about 25 pounds and I can take him off of my back and open up the stand by myself. It takes a bit of practice and some upper body strength but after carrying around a child in my arms for over 16 months I would say that I’ve built up my strength to handle an extra 5 or 6 pounds that comes from the carrier. Right now I’m just starting off on short walks around the neighborhood – it does take a while to build up your muscles but it is comfortable and works great for me. I love that it comes with the sun shade and the pockets that attach to it as well. Overall I’m happy with my purchase and can’t wait to hit the trails and lose this baby weight!

I looked at many packs before deciding on this one. I was hesitant at frist due to some of the reviews saying it was uncomfortable. Well it was at first. Then I adjusted ALL the straps while wearing it of course, including the shoulder straps and now it fits perfectly. Snug against my torso just like a regular hiking pack.

Love all the little accessories, too!

By J.Turner,

Little background: I am 5’2″ and 110, my husband is 6’3″ and just over 200 lb., and we both like this carrier, which is almost unheard of. Our son is just barely 6 mos. old, 18 lbs., and about 27 in.
PROS: MUCH more comfortable for both child and adult than other carriers (we owned several, and tried them all), as child’s weight is more evenly distributed. 5 point harness keeps Houdinis where they should be. Child’s arms and hands are free to move around. Good view of the world for little one. Easy in and out– not a million straps and buckles, as with other carriers. Child can “support” their own weight w/ their feet on the frame of the carrier (watch the video– you will see the baby “bouncing” with his feet on the carrier frame in one clip). So much more interesting and normal for baby than simply hanging from their crotch (again, as with other carriers). Able to take this many places where stroller is simply not realistic (like cobblestone streets, narrow aisles, or where navigating through crowds is difficult).
CONS: Not for smaller babies (<6 mos.). Child really does need to be at least 25 in. (and weight appropriate) and have excellent head/trunk control. Requires some upper-body strength to get it on as manufacturer suggests (should not be placed on an elevated surface to put on). I am a very athletic female and have no issues, but I question how well the “average” woman could do it without using an elevated surface (for my husband, this is a moot point– no issues). Wish it was a little bit more adjustable– there are three “snap” levels for lumbar support, but at the smallest setting, I still wish it would ride a little higher for me (I’m a mere 5’2″). Again, my husband has no issues– he uses the tallest setting, and he is 6’3″. No comfortable head position for child if they fall asleep in the carrier (this is true of all outward-facing carriers, but perhaps someday someone will rectify this?).

All in all, we like this carrier a lot. More expensive than most carriers, but often you get what you pay for. Nice fun prints too, but remember if you want your hubby to help carry baby, you might want a more neutral one (we have the brown “bubbles” and my Marine has yet to complain). Remember that regardless of how great the support is, carrying an extra 20-35 lbs. on your back is going to take a little more out of you, so people w/ extra large children (close to 30 lb. weight limit) shoudln’t place their expectations on comfort too high. If you are extremely petite (under 5′) or very lacking in upper body strength, this may not be the carrier for you, but it beats all the others we have owned and tried hands down!

By Xan77 Xan77,

We absolutely love this carrier. My son LOVES how high up on my back it places him and I love how easy it is to put him in and out of. Unlike other back carriers where it feels like a huge production to put the baby on backwards, this thing is just too easy. It’s awesome and really adorable. My son is super heavy and most carriers just killed my back after only 15 minutes. This thing is so padded and ergonomic that I could easily wear him for over an hour. Get it, you won’t regret it. Oh and I had originally purchased the city carrier just to save some money. When I realized how much I liked it, I sent it back for the Classic carrier because I figured the fabric would be better and it is. The city version’s fabric made weird squeaky noises when you walked which were kind of annoying. Also, the buckle placement seemed a little inconvenient and once I got the Classic version I was glad I did. It’s definitely roomier (which is great for a big baby) and I like the fabric a lot better.

By J.Tucker,

I have a 2 1/2 year old, a 17 month old, and am 24 weeks pregnant. My oldest son’s preschool has a very narrow entrance so getting a stroller in is not an option. This lightweight baby carrier is not only stylish, but also has a very small footprint. So now morning management of my 17 month old is a breeze. If only I could figure out how to do drop-off with three children.

The Correct Way To Use Your Carrier

How to Safely Use Your Baby Carrier

Section One: Research on babywearing injuries

Here is a summary of the information from research articles on injuries related to improper babywearing. Heed these lessons and we can help decrease the already low injury rate related to baby carriers.

First, choose a safe carrier.

The number one cause of injury was due to faulty product design. It’s not enough to rely solely on a company’s reputation. Several big name manufacturers have recalled carriers because babies were injured due to faulty parts and/or design. Here are a few examples:

  • The Baby Bjorn Active carrier, which was just recently introduced and even pricier than the Original, was found to have a defective buckle. You can find out if your Bjorn was recalled on their website: http://www.babybjorn.com. The company will replace the buckle for you, if requested.
  • Maya Wrap used 1/8 inch thick sling rings on some of their baby slings in 2001, which resulted in 20 reports of the rings breaking and one fall, with no reported injuries. These slings were recalled and the company now uses 1/4 inch thick sling rings exclusively.

The lessons here are:

1. If you are buying a used carrier, make sure that it has not been recalled.
2. Even if your carrier hasn’t been recalled, be sure to check the condition of the carrier and all parts before each use.
3. Examine how your child fits in the carrier. Many smaller infants have slipped through leg holes or other gaps in carriers that are too large for a newborn or preemie. On the other hand, is your carrier strong enough to hold the weight of a larger baby or toddler? Most manufacturers have weight guidelines, but you still need to check how the carrier fits your specific child to gauge its true safety.

Second, check the condition of your carrier regularly.

The second major cause of injury was due to old, worn carriers.
I have already mentioned this, but it bears repeating: ALWAYS check the condition of your carrier before you use it!

Third, learn how to use your carrier.

The third major cause of carrier injury was improper usage. You are taking a necessary precaution by reading your carrier instructions and The Thriving Babies Manual to help you learn how to use your carrier safely. Section Two below outlines some helpful safety tips. But always keep in mind that YOU alone are responsible for the safety of your child. Please exercise common sense when using any baby carrier. Your knowledge, prudence and awareness are your child’s best defense against injury!

Fourth, be sure your baby can breathe properly.

One study also raised the issue of adequate ventilation. Always be sure your baby can breathe and that your carrier allows for good air circulation. Certain carriers are made in fabric that is more breathable, such as Solarveil, or authentic rebozos. If you live in a hot climate, these breathable carriers may be especially comfortable for you and your baby.Pre-term (and special needs) babies are particularly sensitive to inadequate ventilation because their lungs are so immature. If you aren’t sure if your baby is getting enough oxygen in the carrier, don’t do it and/or seek medical counsel. The effects of oxygen deprivation can be debilitating and permanent, so always be sure your child can breathe properly. (This is also one HUGE reason why you should NEVER let a newborn cry it out alone.)

Section Two: Practice

Practice builds confidence. Your child will feel more relaxed in a baby carrier if you are comfortable wearing it.

Section Three: Potentially dangerous
activities to avoid

Please exercise common sense when using your carrier and remember that you are the only one responsible for your baby’s immediate safety!

BEWARE OF:

  • Using a carrier while in a moving vehicle of any kind (this includes airplanes).
  • Activities that will bounce or shake your child.
  • Loose fabric or ties. (You can tie the tail of the sling around the rings, or tuck excess fabric away so it doesn’t catch on anything.)
  • Drinking hot liquids while carrying your baby.
  • Hot cooking, especially with hot oil that may splatter.
  • Using sharp knives that a carried baby can inadvertently grab.
  • Lifting or moving heavy objects while carrying your baby.
  • Leaning over too far. (Always try to bend at the knees.)
  • Putting toys or other items in the carrier with your baby that could poke, choke, or otherwise harm your child.
  • Not protecting baby from the elements. (Remember to use sunscreen on your baby if you are going outside, or wind resistant fabric for cold winds.)

A good rule of thumb: If you are unsure about the safety of any activity
DON’T DO IT!  Nothing is worth putting your precious baby at risk.

Section Four: Airplane safety

It is easy to assume that holding a lap baby in a sling or carrier during take-off, landing, or heavy turbulence may make your baby safer, but frankly, there is no replacement for a carseat in a car or on a plane. Wearing a baby in a carrier may actually put you and your child at even greater risk for injury in the event of a crash or very heavy turbulence. Some airlines have rules against anyone using a baby carrier during landing and takeoff. If there were a lot of turbulence or an accident, the excessive force on the wearer could result in a back injury – a liability the airline would like to avoid, hence the rule.I have heard a lot of discussion about airplane safety and baby carriers and wanted to address the issue here. Basically, the best place for an infant on a plane is buckled into her own carseat, with the seat belt securing the carseat. Now, some folks don’t want to buy the extra seat for an infant, especially if money is tight. That is a personal decision you will have to make. But here is some information for you to consider, before you make this potentially life or death choice for your baby:
  • It is very common for lap children to be catapulted to the ceiling during heavy turbulence, especially on international flights.
  • In minor crashes, the crew can often help everyone to safety, but lap children get thrown and are often impossible to find, so they get left behind.
  • Holding your child on your lap could be the most dangerous place for them because guess where your torso is going to go during a jolt? Your chest will slam into your legs, possibly crushing your child, if she isn’t already airborne.
  • If you put your child in a carseat while you drive, why wouldn’t you take the same precaution at even greater speeds?

If you STILL choose not to purchase a ticket for your infant, you can request an “infant block” where the airline will basically save the seat next to you, until all the other seats are taken. Then, you could still bring and use your carseat, without paying for an extra ticket, if the flight isn’t full. There is no guarantee that you will get the extra seat, though, so it’s not foolproof.
A True Babywearing Story

“I was at the airport in baggage claim and I went up to a skycap to ask for help with my luggage. At the time I had my 19 mo in my frankenkozy on my back and was holding my 3 1/2 yo in my arms. He told me to wait where I was and he would help me.We were talking while I waited for my luggage and my 19 mo saw something and leaned out to the side. The skycap’s eyes got really big, he hadn’t even noticed she was there!I love babywearing, how else could I have carried 54+ pounds of tired kids around Sky Harbor baggage claim ???”

Checklist for a Perfect Beco Gemini Fit

1.Where does the waist band go?

The waistband is worn by most people at the top of their hipbones, resting on the pelvis. Do not wear it up around your natural waist near your ribcage, and do not wear it down *on* your hips (it will put pressure on your sciatic nerves running down your buttocks). More important than the exact spot though, is to make sure that the waistband is EVEN front to back. You don’t want the waistband high on one side and low on the other. If you can’t get it to even up and stay in place, tighten your belt a little and try again.

For example, in a back carry there is a tendency for the buckle on the waistband to ride up above the belly as the body of the carrier sinks down on the opposite side from the weight of the child. Nope! Push it down so that the buckle and the black nylon webbing go *under* your belly and the waistband is more or less even front to back.

2.How tight should the shoulder straps be?

If the shoulder straps are too tight, they will actually lift your baby’s weight up and support it with your shoulders. You don’t want that. You want your baby’s weight to drop down and be supported at the hips. The shoulder straps just serve to pull your baby in closer to your body. If the padding of the shoulder straps feels like it’s chafing your armpits, or you feel pressure on your shoulders, you might have the shoulder straps too tight. If your baby is sagging outward, or sagging downward, or you feel like your baby is not snuggled closely into your chest or back, tighten them up.

3. Chest strap placement and armpit rub

The chest strap (connecting the two shoulder straps) should be at the base of your neck (in front carry), or just below your collarbone (in back carry). If not, slide it up or down the runners to be in the right place. Armpit rubbing can sometimes be relieved by wearing the chest strap placed *lower* on your body, so experiment with positioning and see if that helps pull the shoulder straps out of your armpits. Armpit rub is also typically caused by having your shoulder straps too tight. Try loosening them up.

4.Are the shoulder straps resting just inside your shoulder caps?

They should not be resting *on* your shoulder joint, nor too close to your neck, but right in between. If they are slipping out too far onto your shoulder cap, tighten up your chest strap so that it pulls them in. NOTE: If you have your shoulder straps worn crossed, you won’t need the chest strap. The chest strap is for straps in backpack (aka rucksack) style, it connects them and keeps them from slipping off your shoulders.

5.I feel wobbly! or My back is sore!

If you are wearing your baby for the first time on your back, and your baby is older, then your core muscles will need to adjust to babywearing. Keep your babywearing sessions short at first and increase gradually as your back and shoulder muscles strengthen. Make sure your posture is good, stand up straight, and go for a walk with your baby instead of standing in one place.

6.What about facing out?

Babies need to be able to hold their own head upright before facing out in the carrier. Facing out is much harder on the wearer than facing in. When facing in, a baby’s heavy, dangly parts (head, arms, legs) are leaning toward your body and/or wrapped around your body. Your center of gravity doesn’t change so much. When your baby is facing OUT, the head is angled away from your body, the arms and legs are hanging out away from your body. You have to work harder to maintain your center of gravity, so you arch your back farther backwards and clench your muscles tighter to do so. Personally, I think 16-17 pounds is about the comfort limit for front carry facing out, 20 pounds for front carry facing in…but listen to your body.

7.When should I switch to back carry?

In general, you can put your baby on your back once your baby has good head control. This means that if your baby’s body is vertical, he/she can hold her head upright without it flopping over. Back carry is almost always more comfortable than front carry. Humans are built to carry weight on their backs, not on their front. If front carry doesn’t feel good, then give back carrying a try. If your baby is 20 pounds or over, you should be *primarily* wearing your baby on your back.

8.My baby doesn’t seem happy in the carrier

Make sure that you are trying the Beco Gemin carrier with a recently fed, changed, happy baby. Don’t try the carrier for the first time with a hungry, cranky baby. This will frustrate both of you. Also be prepared to walk around a LOT when you are trying to carrier for the first time. If your baby is not used to being worn in a carrier, he/she might need some soothing walking motion to get used to it and feel reassured. Above all do NOT put your baby in and then just stand around like a statue. It’s best if you can put your baby in the carrier and then go for a walk. Even walking around your house is fine, if that’s all you can manage. Just keep moving.

Babies go through phases. They may hate being in a carrier at three months, then at six months they LOVE it. I have had dozens of parents return carriers because “I love it, but my baby hates it!”, and then they turn around and buy the same carrier months later because they tried again with a friend’s carrier and now the baby adores being worn. So keep that in mind, especially if you have a print that you love…it might not be available at a later date.

This review is from: Beco Baby Carrier Gemini – Ginger (Baby Product)

We’ve tried every carrier-maya sling, pouch, bjorn, ergo, mobywrap. THIS is the one that works! Here’s a summary of what’s worked or not and why:

Maya sling – not suitable for long periods of wear. The metal o ring digs into my shoulder, and becomes painful after extended use. I also have personally never felt quite 100% confident that my baby was securely in the wrap, though i’m sure this is probably operator error. Other people love slings.

Pouch – we tried this when our girl was very little, and the ease and portability of this piece was undone by my constantly having to support her within the pouch. Again, probably operator error, but I wasn’t too pleased with it’s performance.

Bjorn – this is a great option if you have the back strength of an olympian. Our daughter absolutely loves the bjorn, as she can face out and see the world. I hate it because even after a 5 minute walk, i’m nearly in traction from the back pain. We live in brooklyn, so we walk a lot, and this is just not an option. I should mention our baby is now 8 months old, and weighs about 17 lbs.

Ergo (sport) – my favorite. supportive, easy to use, fantastic for extended wear. This is a super option IF your baby likes it. Our does not, because as mentioned, she prefers to face out and engage with the world, and actually gets frustrated having to face me. When in the ergo, she spends her time craning her neck, to try to look out. Also, when used in the hip carry position, i found myself to be incredibly off balance, with so much weight on one side. I fell – with baby – while in hip carry position, due to uneven balance. Once again, this is probably operator error, and my own sense of unbalance, but perhaps worth noting for the clumsier baby-wearer.

Mobywrap – simply put, too much going on for me. The ends of the wrap, when unwrapped, would wind up sweeping the dirty floor/street, etc. when not done up, and again, brooklyn…. dirt… gross. If you live in an extremely clean environment, this might be a great option, though it requires a lot of wrapping to get going. Certainly find for many, just not my preference.

Beco Gemini – oh thank god. This combines the face-out feature of the bjorn, with the fantastic ergonomic weight distribution of the ergo! The fabric is organic – always a plus – and the print is cute and chic. The carrier also features 4 ways to wear, so i feel like i’m getting the best of all carriers here. I’m quite tall (5’9″), and while my baby does not seem to sit as high on my chest as in the instructions, we’re both quite comfortable and happy. We can now take long walks without pain (me) and frustration (baby)! As the weight limit is up to 35 lbs, we’ll be using the gemini for a long time to come.
I’m very pleased with this carrier, and i’d highly recommend to all.

I’ve been doing some research to look for a baby carrier that would support my back while carrying my infant son. I was having trouble deciding between the Beco Gemini and the Butterfly II, so I got them both to compare. I have a large baby, at one month he was 12 lbs and 24 inches long, and now he is 6 wks old. I didn’t like the idea of having to buy an addition infant insert for the Ergos, which led me to the Beco brand.

I ultimately went with the Gemini simply because my son does not fit in the infant insert of the Butterfly. His head sticks over the top, and he doesn’t have the head control to deal with that, so I would have to have the hood on all the time, and I wouldn’t be able to see him. So obviously that is a major point for me. In the Gemini, I snap the base into the narrow setting and then hold him as I snap the straps across my back. It is very easy. With the head rest flipped up he has plenty of head support. Obviously, he is big infant, but I feel like he is very secure and comfortable, and I am comfortable too. We went for a walk with it today, and it didn’t bother my back at all (I have had problems with my back since my daughter was about a year old- 3 years ago). He slept the whole time.

I also like the streamlined look of it, compared to the Butterfly. The Gemini has many fewer straps and buckles to figure out, and getting an infant in and out is VERY easy, as opposed to having to put him on a flat surface to get him in all the right places. I like the idea of all the different ways I can put him in the Gemini later, but obviously haven’t tried those yet. But if you are like me and looking for a carrier for an infant, but that supports your back, I think the gemini is a great way to go!

This is a great baby carrier. I wanted to replace the Baby Bjorn carrier that I’ve been using because my son was starting to outgrow it and it was really starting to hurt my upper back. I wanted something that was easy to use, like the Baby Bjorn. Here are the things I like about this carrier:

-Easy to use–it doesn’t take long to figure out how to strap the carrier on. I had my son in it within 15 minutes of opening the package. Now that I know what I’m doing, I can get him in and out within seconds.
-Very easy to get the baby in and out of the carrier–much easier that the old carrier I was using.
-The fabric is soft and well padded
-Multiple positions for carrying baby (front, side, and back)
-It doesn’t hurt my back!
-Not bulky like some other carriers I had researched. I’m 5’5″ with a small frame and didn’t want something super bulky.
-Will fit a newborn without having to buy any extra inserts. *My son is 8 months old so I can’t comment on how well it works for newborns. I am happy to know that I can use this when the next baby comes along, though.
-The buckles have double locks on them and require two hands for release
-Feels VERY secure

My only complaint about the Gemini is that the extra fabric from the straps hangs down quite a bit. You can’t tell from the picture of the carrier. The waist strap is the one that bothers me the most. I just tuck it in after I get my baby secured. That’s really a minor complaint and wouldn’t keep me from buying another one!

Let me start by saying it took until baby two to finally buy this carrier even though we had been storing it in our amazon wish list since baby one was about 6 months old. We have one sling, one wrap, two carriers (including a hiking one and a front or back facing one) and have always been a bit underwhelmed with the carriers until this one! The other carriers thus far have been a little uncomfortable for wearer and baby, as well as complicated to put on/take off. We just got this last night and I put my 2 year old (30 lbs) in it like a back pack. She and I both loved it and let me say this is a fussy Dad and a fussy 2 year old so I assure you one of us would have had a problem with it pretty quickly if there was one to have. So far no regrets and I only wish we would have saved our money and bought this a year or two ago.We bought it for our 6 month old and will test it out with her today so hopefully this isn’t jumping the gun, however judging from how it felt with a 30 pounder on my back I’m assuming it will be pure ecstasy with a 14 lb baby.Save yourself the time and money and just buy this one now.

The baby bjorn I had, even with “lumbar support”, killed my shoulders after my baby was about 12 lbs. I bought an ergo but he did not fit in it at the supposedly-ready 5 month mark — his little legs were splayed too far apart. But now he’s taller at 6 months and he fits great and I LOVE my Ergo!! Great carrier, very comfortable. I also owned a babyhawk for about 3 days and while I adored the cute pattern on that, I didn’t feel it was as safe with the buckles (Ergo tests the buckles to high standards, they just feel more “solid”, and also the Ergo has reinforcement elastic bands just in case a buckle does ever fail it should “catch” on the elastic.)

This is the first time I have ever written a review. I felt the need to tell other moms out there that this is the best $120.00 I have spent since having my baby!!! I bought the Ergo Baby when my little guy was 5 months old. He is 9.5 months now and still loves it. My only regret is not purchasing it sooner. He LOVES it!! I don’t know how moms can live with out it. I also had the Baby Bijorn and I can say, this is SOOOO much more comfortable for mommy and baby. My husband also loves it and goes on long walks with baby on his back. The only bad thing I can say about it is that it is a little difficult to put baby on your back without help… But, it can be done. Just make sure to do it over a couch! Hope you enjoy yours as much as we love ours!

Beco Butterfly II Carriers- Think Twice Before You Buy

The Beco Butterfly Baby Carrier combines great ergonomics, excellent weight distribution and stylish design.

Every piece is handmade from top quality designer fabric and heavy duty webbing and buckles, and can be used with children from newborns to toddlers, in both front and back carries.

The innovative internal sling enables you to securely buckle your baby into the carrier, then handle Baby + Carrier as a single unit. You can put your baby on your back very easily, just like putting on a backpack!

The Beco Butterfly’s removable infant insert for newborns allows your little baby under 15 pounds to ride higher in the carrier in an ergonomically comfortable position.

When your baby outgrows the need for the newborn insert, you simply place her into the main Y shaped internal sling attached to the carrier’s shoulder straps, which improves the distribution of the baby’s weight and enables parents to pass baby from one wearer to another without taking the baby out of the carrier.

The inside panel of the Beco Butterfly Carrier acts as a safety harness and prevents baby from slipping down or falling out of the carrier. 1) Child can be worn on front or back and easily shifted from one to the other. 2) Tall, tapered carrier body provides lots of upper body support for your baby or toddler, holds baby close to your body for greater comfort. 3) A Sternum (chest) strap is connected to the shoulder straps and slides along their length. 4) Padded waistband is firm and supportive while maintaining a slim profile. 5) High quality designer fabrics are smooth, stylish, and comfortable against the skin. 6) Padded leg holes prevent chafing of little thighs. 7) User waist range fits 25 to 50 inches (63 to127cm). 8) User height range fits from 4 foot 9 to 6 foot 2. (144cm to 188cm

What Makes The Beco  Baby Backpack So Different?

  • Removable Infant Insert
    • Beco Butterfly 2 is the ONLY carrier on the market with this (patent pending) feature. Infant insert enables even the smallest babies to ride safely and comfortably, in ergonomically proper position in our baby carrier. Infant insert can be removed once baby outgrows the need for it. Recommended use for infant insert is 7-15 lbs. Infant insert is INCLUDED with purchase, NO not need to purchase any accessory in order to have a complete package.
  • Security Inside Panel
    • The shoulder straps of the baby carrier are attached to the carrier’s inside panel, which improves the distribution of the baby’s weight (thus the carrier is VERY comfortable for the wearer and the baby), and it enables parent’s to pass baby from one wearer to another without taking the baby out of the carrier (very convenient feature). Inside panel contributes to the safe use of the carrier (baby sits between this panel and the outside main body of the carrier, these two components together creates a harness for baby’s body), also loading baby on wearer’s back is much safer and easier with this inside panel, because it prevents baby from slipping down (or falling out).

Beco Butterfly II Baby Carrier (Baby Product)
Let me start this off by saying that I have tried just about every carrier out there. Snugli, Hotsling, Hip Hammock, mai-tais and various other slings and carriers. By the time my son was 1 and I still hadn’t found one I liked I had almost given up on baby wearing. I’m a larger girl with a big bust and bad back. Nothing was comfortable for me. I borrowed a friends Ergo and for me it was still uncomfortable. I also didn’t like that I had to use the waist extender. But as far as carriers go it worked out the best for me. Until I did some online searching. I found the butterfly and read about it. There were so many great features. One of my favorite is that I could take my son off of me and transfer him to my partner without taking him out. I also felt MUCH safer putting him on my back with the Beco instead of the Ergo. But that’s just me. The biggest selling point for me was that it came with everything whereas with the Ergo you had to buy the extras.
Now I have a 6 week old and haven’t used any carrier but this one. I love it so much!

This review is from: Beco Butterfly II Baby Carrier (Baby Product)
Or, Where Were These 31 Years Ago…After looking at the pro’s and con’s of the numerous baby carriers out there, I decided on purchasing a Beco Butterfly II for my daughter’s first baby. I will admit there was an ulterior motive – my upper body strength isn’t that great and I was going to help out with the newborn. I wanted to be able to carry the baby but wanted to have my arms and hands free since I like to multitask. We chose the Beco Butterfly II for many reasons.

The Beco was highly recommended by a number of maternity shops; these shops carried several brands, so it wasn’t just to make the sale of a Beco. The similarity to a good backpack was egnomically important since two of the grandparents have back problems; the Beco distributed weight evenly and provided lower back support. The adjustability of the carrier was paramount since there are six users who range from 5’1″ in height to 5′ 10″ and whose weights range from 110 to over 200 pounds. All of the four grandparents and both parents have been able to use the Beco with no problems. Further, the Beco is comfortable even when you are toting a 10 pound two week old baby for extended periods of time. I have worn the Beco when sitting and have had no problems typing while wearing it.

My grandson was having some trouble with spitting up after he ate. The doctor suggested keeping him upright for 30 minutes after feeding. We found this was very useful for that purpose; as an additional benefit, we found my grandson remained much more calm when carried in the Beco.

I would definitely recommend watching the DVD before using the Beco. It answered the questions we had about using the Beco which we did not feel were clearly addressed in the pamphlet that came with the carrier. Yes, this item is a bit pricey, but it is right in line with the better baby carriers out there.

If you do not like the patterns shown on Amazon, check the Beco web site. They show all the current options and provide information as to where specific patterns can be purchased.

I am a baby wearer though and through! I have 4 daughters, 9yrs. through 6 months and have used many carriers for all of them. The Bjorn, Sprout Pouch, Peanut Shell, Zolo Wear, Sling-Lings, and up until this one, may fave, the Baby Hawk… I think the Baby Hawk has been dethroned to a second place in my pole, (But I still LOVE my Baby Hawk and use it almost as much as the Beco)… I LOVE my beco-baby carrier! it is the BEST carrier I’ve EVER used for back-carrying, I love it so much!!! It looks cool, feels good, is secure, and well, I just love it! I HIGHLY reccomend this product to any mom or mom-to-be!!!
